The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
