Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such medications need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
