The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
