The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
